the beginning: why?

today i heard about a midwestern town that gets hit by tornados.  lots and lots of tornados. (i think there was a documentary on it.)

after a horrifying storm the community was in shambles. houses destroyed. furniture ripped apart and lost. lives uprooted like trees.

all the people in this town were gathering together in a community building.  in the community building there were photographs.  photographs that people had picked up and found all over the town. in the fields, by the road, in the rubble. the whole town was in the building sorting through the photographs. trying to find some of their own. trying, desperately, to find something that looked like the life they once had.

photographs are evidence of a life that is lived.

photographs are soemtimes the only thing that will help us remember what we’ve done or where we’ve been.  sometimes they are the only thing that can help us to remember things that were once put away and forgotten.

how can we measure the worth of a photograph?

is that almost like saying how can we measure a life?

so i have made the decision to make a photograph every day.

i might not post every photograph every day. i might take a day off or forget.

but i will have a photograph of that day and i will post it some time.

by the end of the year hopefully there will be 365 photos.  hopefully i will be able to look back and see the evidence of what has happened during this year and maybe i will remember things that would have otherwise been forgotten.
